Obituary: Sharon Kowalski

On October 1, 2023, Minnesota’s LGBTQ+ community lost an advocate for our people, as well as the disabled community.

Sharon Kowalski passed away at the age 67 in Saint Cloud.

According to a statement, Kowalski’s life “was a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Her story captured the hearts and minds of people around the world, and her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”

“Over the years,” the statement continued, “Sharon Kowalski’s story served as a catalyst for change, leading to advancements in LGBTQ+ and disability rights. Her life and the legal battles she and Karen faced, shed light on the importance of ensuring that everyone has the right to make decisions about their own lives and relationships. Sharon’s memory will forever serve as a reminder of the power of love, resilience and the fight for justice.”

Kowlaski was survived by her partner Karen Thompson, Patty Bresser and members of their biological family. Both Thompson and Bresser request that in lieu of flowers to donate to organizations that support LGBTQ+ and Disability communities. A celebration of Kowalski’s life will take place in 2024.
