There will be a Drag Story Time in Chaska. It is happening regardless of what you’ve seen on social media.

It will take place at a children’s clothing store, called Little Roo’s on Saturday, July 8 at 11:00AM. Local drag performer Miz Diagnosis will read two books at this free event. One of the books was written by Shakopee-based author Christopher Straub. Straub will be there to sign copies of his book. There will also be other activities during this event to keep the children occupied.

This place had story time events in the past. Marissa Held-Nordling, the owner of Little Roo’s, said that their store loves “to give back to the community and we host free events all the time. We have done princess story times in the past, and I’ve had a couple people walk up to me and say, ‘Are you going to do anything besides princesses?’ Then that really got me thinking. So I went online, researched what other kind of story times are happening in other venues, libraries, and drag story time kept popping up.”

As the proprietor of Little Roo’s for “about four-and-a-half years,” Held-Nordling adds that her staff “are an integral part of all the creativity here from events and such, and one of them happens to be in the LGBTQ community. Held-Nordling found out that Miz Diagnosis, a native of Chaska, does story times. “I thought that’d be a great way to include the LGBTQ community here in Carver County and Chaska along with some local authors and other community members to our story time series,” explained Held-Nordling.

Even in the face of some backlash from local people who were taken aback by this event. “We’ve had a handful of negative comments here and there on top of some people coming in to voice their opinion,” explained Held-Nordling. “But, I would have to say, for every handful of negative, we’ve had dozens and dozens more show up to show their support and love.”

To affirm this, Held-Nordling found plenty of support from within and beyond Carver County. She explained, “A lot have came out, even to the store, besides the messages and comments on social media, came into the store themselves saying, ‘Hey, we support you. Thank you for doing this. Thank you for being so vocal in a county like Carver County, that you as a small business want to stand with the LGBTQ+ community.’”

However, as Held-Nording said, “We’re all very excited, and it is going to be a normal story time, like our other ones.”

Additionally, Held-Nordiling thinks it’s “very important as a small business nowadays that members or neighbors in the LGBTQ community know there are small businesses that want to stand with them.”
For the Rainbow Families in Carver County and across Minnesota come support Little Roos on Saturday – and stay for the Drag Story Hour.
