Home ownership is a dream for many of us. It is the epitome of the American Dream.

Yet, local housing prices and mortgage rates are on the rise. Is there still hope for us to own a home today?

Perhaps. On Saturday, May 20, the Twin Cities Diversity Homeownership Fair will be held at the New Millennium Academy (5150 Brooklyn Blvd.) in Brooklyn Park. This event is to provide a one-stop event to assist you through the process. That ranges from shopping for a new home all the way to the escrow process.

According to Bryan R. Sletten, the President of the Minnesota Chapter of the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance, The Twin Cities Diversity Homeownership Fair “is designed to support all members of our diverse community in achieving their dream of owning a home. We believe that everyone deserves access to stable and affordable housing, regardless of their background or financial situation.”

Sletten continued, “The Twin Cities Diversity Homeownership Fair is a Community event designed for anybody interested in learning more about sustainable homeownership! Fair attendees can benefit from participating in the ‘Homebuyer 101’ breakout sessions offered in English, Spanish, Hmong and Somali. Take advantage of the Expo by connecting with local real estate industry professionals dedicated to making a positive change within the Communities they serve.”

This fair was important for us, as we try to waddle through the home buying process. This goes beyond finding the right home and getting financing. It is about ensuring that we have a shot to live wherever we feel right at home – even if it’s a community that traditionally unwelcoming of LGBTQ neighbors.

Even if you missed the Homeownership Fair, there is a long game for Sletten and the local members of the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance. “We have a lot of resources with the alliance’s vast network of real estate professionals including but not limited to: realtors, mortgage lenders, title companies, insurance, and so on,” Sletten explained. “There’s a wealth of experience within our organization between our members and this family of people and their resources are readily available to any homebuyer. Our goal is to provide the best tools and opportunities to anyone who wants to achieve the goal of homeownership.”

All you have to do is to contact one of realtors within this organization and connect with them. Whether you are buying or selling, they can certainly assist you through the process.

Is this time to own your first home? Stop by the Twin Cities Homeownership Fair is your first stop towards doing so. Don’t forget to support our realtors!
