Leonard Bernstein was an innovative conductor and composer whose music touched many genres. From Broadway to popular songs, Bernstein forged a music library that enthralled listeners and audiences in the 20th Century. His music still touches us today.

On December 12, The Woman’s Club will welcome a performance of Dear Lenny: Bernstein’s Life in Songs & Letters.

This is not just a show that features Bernstein’s greatest hits. It dives into his friendships with his contemporaries, including Stephen Sondheim, Aaron Copland, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Jerome Robbins, Miles Davis and more. All of this is presented as a “theatrical concert” that, in the words of Bernstein, appeals to both the intellect and the heart.”

“We concocted this piece as a meditation on Leonard Bernstein,” explained Dear Lenny Co-Creator Bradley Greenwald, “and decided the best way to do that would be to use only his music and selections from his public and personal letters that had recently been published. We wouldn’t write any commentary ourselves–his music and the voices in the letters would be more revelatory, and direct, and pure.”

This performance features three of its creators: singers Bradley Greenwald and Prudence Johnson and pianist Dan Chouinard, along with soprano Liz Hawkinson, clarinetist Bruce Thornton and bassist Greg Hippen. Some of these performers are local and very well-known to the Twin Cities.

Some of the songs performed at The Woman’s Club will be familiar to us, especially two of them his notable Broadway musicals and movies, such as West Side Story and On The Town – to name a few.

The performance starts at 7:00 PM. If you want to attend, tickets start at $45. A VIP package is available for $75, which includes parking, a signature cocktail, and a reception with the artists. Starting at 5:00 PM, you can dine with a curated menu along with drinks. A reservation is required by e-mailing frontdesk@womansclub or calling 612-813-5300.

Expect to be enchanted by this enhanced retrospective of one of the finest American composers at The Woman’s Club on December 12.
