A Friendly Wager – With Chocolate – On The Timberwolves

Take the National Basketball Association’s Western Conference Finals and put a wager on it.

That was what the Mayor of the city of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, and the Mayor of the city of Dallas, Eric Johnson, have done. With the Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks vying for a spot in the NBA Finals, both mayors placed a wager on the Conference Finals. If the Timberwolves win, Minneapolis gets an assortment of chocolates from Dallas confectioners. If the Mavericks take the series, they will get Dancing Bear Chocolates.

The LGBTQ+ owned and operated small business in the Victory Neighborhood on Minneapolis’ north side became the focus of the wager after it broke the news both in the Twin Cities and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Run by Steven Howard and Joe Skiffer, Dancing Bear Chocolate has been open for business since 2018 with a welcoming slogan of “Chocolate, Gelato, Pastry & Smiles”.

How did Dancing Bear Chocolate became a part of this wager? As Skiffer explained, Mayor Frey reached out to Dancing Bear Chocolate after Mayor Johnson offered his wager.  “When it got to the mayor, they thought of us,” Skiffer further explained. “Their office called and asked if we would be okay if they did that, and we, of course, said absolutely.”

How the world knew about the wager with Dancing Bear Chocolate came from a tweet by Mayor Frey on Twitter/X. The story was picked up by the media in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

It is worth noting that Dancing Bear Chocolate has been doing more than creating sweet treats in North Minneapolis. They have been working with a local school in the neighborhood by showing students how their sweet treats were made.

One message Skiffer wants to pass along to our community know is to come to their shop and patronize them. They are among a few shops up in the Victory Neighborhood that are open for business. Their store is worth the drive or ride.
