City Looks Salon

It’s not easy to find a new stylist. You can’t just consider price point or years of experience. It’s about finding someone you trust with your personal image. And that kind of trust can’t be gained simply by talking about your hair, or pointing out pictures of celebrities. It only can be gained by seeing great results firsthand. So, most of us at one time or another might have used the stalking method to find a new stylist—that is, spot a stranger with great hair, gather up the courage to approach him or her, and ask which salon he or she frequents.
Fortunately, that method seems to work very well for City Looks, whose stylists attract a diverse clientele from all over the Twin Cities. Originally operating under the Cost Cutters franchise system, City Looks co-owner Gloria Jones chose to revamp her salon completely in January of this year.
Jones says, “I always tried to make sure my staff over the years was excellent, to meet or exceed the expectations of the clients. But the Cost Cutters model was not fitting their skill level and their desire to fulfill more of the customer’s needs and wants, so it made sense to change. I definitely felt they were worth more than $14.95 a hair cut.”
While prices were raised to accommodate a more customer-oriented focus, they remain reasonable at around $25 for a basic shampoo, cut, and style.
City Looks is a full-service hair salon, including relaxing, perms, specialty styles, and facial waxing, but its forte is color. Jones’s staff uses Paul Mitchell products to create anything from a very subtle, natural look to something more extreme.
“Paul Mitchell products are unique,” Jones states. “I’ve worked with literally at least a dozen-and-a-half different hair color systems over the years, and Paul Mitchell is by far and away the best I’ve ever used. It’s also low-ammonia, which leaves the hair in excellent condition, and it’s better for the environment.”
The staff includes Justin Link, a national educator for John Paul Mitchell Systems; Moses Jones of TLC’s A Makeover Story; April Riesberg; and Rocki Gamblin.
City Looks’s space is being remodeled to add a hospitality area and full-service color bar, as well as to improve its overall ambience.
