Project 515, named for the number of Minnesota laws that according to a research study discriminate against the state’s same-sex couples, has a new Executive Director, Laura Smidzik. With more than 20 years of experience, she will bring the desired leadership and direction to help propel the organization into the future.
The organization formed in 2007 after a public opinion survey found that Minnesota laws did not reflect the more accepting beliefs of its residents. While Project 515 is not an advocacy group for same-sex marriage, it does aim to bring the discrepancy between current laws and public opinion to attention of voters. Its goal is to promote the facts, free from politics.

Weisner Leaves Bethany Lutheran Church
Bethany Lutheran Church, in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis, is losing Reverend Jay A. Weisner to University Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Weisner took his first call to Bethany more than six years ago. Since then, he has seen the congregation grow through years of trial and tribulation. He has witnessed the doors almost close, only to have the church rebound to become a joyous beacon of Christ’s love in the community.
Weisner thanks the congregation for being so caring and supportive. He always will remember his first parish as the one that “broke convention by calling me.”
Bethany is an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) congregation rooted in faith, family, and acceptance. It is welcoming and supportive of all individuals regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Bethany plans to continue this tradition of service and support throughout the community as it searches for a new pastor.
