At Common Roots, the staff provides clients with truly from-scratch catering, representing a modern take on classic American cuisine using as many local and organic ingredients as possible. “We are proud to support local and sustainable farmers,” Ross says. “Our short growing season means that every sprig of dill, every pea shoot and pepper and tomato, every cherry and apple is a cause for celebration. All year long, we work with local farmers raising animals for meat and dairy in a sustainable way, and growing grain organically. We believe in letting the ingredients speak for themselves.”
Because Common Roots makes everything from scratch, Ross says they can easily control which ingredients go into each menu item, allowing for dietary restrictions. “Our menu was created with this in mind and we are able to offer a number of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options,” Ross says. “Additionally, we are more than happy to provide alternative custom menu options for anyone with food allergies or intolerances.”
That same commitment extends to operating in an environmentally responsible way. All of Common Roots’ food waste is composted by Eureka Recycling. According to Ross, since opening, the company has diverted hundreds of thousands of pounds of waste from landfills, and they provide compostable or reusable service ware for all events.
That attention to detail and care also translates to the customer experience. When choosing a catering company, it’s best to make sure that all costs associated with service are included in the original proposal. At Common Roots, they are very transparent in the way they operate and have a separate charge for food, beverage, staffing, equipment, and service charge. And when vetting a caterer, be sure to ask about the company’s tipping policy.
“We include a percentage service charge that covers event coordination, setup and teardown, and composting services,” Ross says. “We believe it is important to pay all our staff a fair, competitive, and reliable wage, and therefore, we do not charge for or accept gratuity, and make sure the client understands this policy.”
Catering coordinators assist with event coordination from beginning to end and can include venue selection, food and beverage planning, and timeline coordination. And the team of highly trained service staff are dedicated to flawless event execution for every event.
