She Rock She Rock: Music and Empowerment

If you’ve always wanted to pick up an instrument and rock out like a pro, now’s your chance! She Rock She Rock, a non-profit organization that focuses on uniting and empowering women and gender non-conforming people through music, is hosting its annual Ladies Rock Camp from April 5-7. Ladies Rock Camp gives people the opportunity to learn an instrument, form a band, and prepare for their first performance in three days, all while encouraging positive self-image and fellowship in a creative environment.Ladies Rock Camp is a one-of-a-kind experience for people interested in exploring their musical sides. Assistant Program Director Vanessa Bray believes, “Playing an instrument can increase social skills in situations such as a band setting where people learn to cooperate and listen to other musicians in order to create music together. Feeling confident in one’s abilities to work well with others is an essential part not only in music but in every day life. Learning to play an instrument takes patience and perseverance.”  Bray adds, “When people see the results of the effort they have put in, they feel a sense of pride and their confidence in their abilities increases. Playing an instrument also fosters self-expression by giving people an outlet for their voices to be heard.”Ladies Rock Camp is open to all individuals who identify as female, trans, or gender non-conforming because these groups of people are often marginalized by the music industry and society as a whole. Bray notes, “Because of this, we provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for people of all backgrounds to be themselves and feel empowered through music and fellowship.”

A typical day at Ladies Rock Camp includes music lessons taught by professional gigging musicians in the Twin Cities, workshops, band rehearsals, and time for socializing. Participants have a final public performance at Bunkers Music Bar and Hall where they can showcase their new skills.

Ladies Rock Camp is open to all people (ages 19+)who identify as female, trans, or gender non-conforming. All instruments are provided, and all levels of musical experience are welcome.
