Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

When you sign on to sit through the third Chanhassen Dinner Theatre production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” for the third time in six seasons, you sort of grit your teeth and wonder …. And then, the moment the stage lights up and the band starts belting that infectious music, you remember why the show sells out each and every round. Sure, there’s the infectious music of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 20-some non-stop tunes—I defy you not to still be humming them tomorrow—but it’s Chan’s routinely spectacular way with spectaculars that seals the deal. With Artistic Director Michael Brindisi honing the freshness, vibrancy and cheek of previous renditions, costume designer Rich Hamson dressing the cast in technicolor and a bucketload of sequins (never mind Joseph’s amazing, truth-in-advertising coat) and Nayna Ramey’s spare but striking building-block set, it’s choreographer Tamara Kangas Erickson and her troupe of bodies, pliable as wet spaghetti, make this production a must-see.

You know the story (if not, consult Genesis, chapter 39). It’s told irreverently, to say the least (okay, thickly frosted with shtick and visual gags—don’t miss the sheep) and ever so good-naturedly. (If only this governor as amiable counselor and forgiver of your enemies prevailed in the Middle East today.)
