The words “thought-provoking” don’t apply. This musical spoof of the ’80s cult film is pure cotton candy—a tasty riff on a California lad’s dream of—no, not simply movie stardom, but opening a roller disco. He gets a little help from the movie’s Olivia Newton John lookalike, a blonde Greek goddess (natch). Plus, Chan’s terrific song-and-danceters get to strut their stuff on wheels.

Get out your headdress girlfriend! Producer Bette Midler’s stage musical version of the queer cult film celebrates how we celebrate ourselves when we defy gender norms. Stephan Elliot, who wrote and directed the 1994 drag/trans film smash, has co-written the musical with Allan Scott. Defiantly and divinely fabulous!

Eugene O’Neill’s autobiographical milestone is called The Great American Play perhaps more frequently than any other. Guthrie icons Peter Michael Goetz and Helen Carey play the Tyrones. She’s medically addicted to morphine. He thinks she simply lacks the will to ‘just say no!’ as Nancy Reagan might have put it.
