2014 Holiday Gift Guide: Andy Lien
Birch, Berries, and Birds
The Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais is where I found what makes me think fondly of the holidays in Minnesota. Birch, berries, and birds. Sarah Angst’s Three Chickadees and Nick Wroblewski’s Waxwings prints remind me of the beauty and life in the stark, cold winter. I want to serve cordials and cocktails in this glassware by Roost, while nursing my own hot coffee in Birch Mugs by Lenore Lampi.

Altai Hok Skis
Part ski, part snowshoe, full-on FUN! Hok skis are the perfect solution for winter adventurers wanting the maneuverability of a snowshoe with some of the speed of a ski to explore outdoors. With its universal binding and integrated climbing skin, you can walk up a hill and ski down the other side. It’s more efficient than snowshoeing because of the glide—you don’t have to lift with every stride. Made in Washington state from sustainable paulownia wood cores combined with natural fibers and fiberglass, beautifully simple graphics represent art themes from the Altai Mountains. The name, ‘Hok,’ is the Tuwa word for ski in the Altai Mountains and the Tuwas are the smallest ethnic group in the area and the most dedicated skiers. The Hoks are the perfect playmate for our Midwest winters.

I walked past these dishes in the store and fell in love with them. They’re subtle. They’re clean with a little rustic. Graphic plates, cups, and vases, all hand-painted by Minnesota brand Clutch Design Co. They’re local and wonderful. And they can be shipped.

Sweet Jules Caramels
As much as I love chocolate, I’m all about the caramel. I was introduced to Sweet Jules caramels last year and can’t get enough of them. The flavors range from fun to classic to a bit esoteric, with Beer & Pretzel to Vanilla Caramel to Midnight Spice, and so many others for the tasting. Available in various sizes, this Gourmet Caramel Tower is a crowd pleaser.

State Icon Ornaments
State Icon Ornaments are smaller versions of State Icon illustrations by redshoes26 (approximately 1.25″ in diameter x .75″ deep). They come in aluminum and glass canisters and are adorned with a sparkly wreath and a ribbon, and hang from silver ornament hooks. I’m a goon for local landmarks and already have my alma mater’s Old Main on my list of must-gets for my tree. Christy’s got a whole lot of designs from all different states, not just Minnesota. Mix and match or collect them all.

Royal Highness, Queen, and Princess Pillows
Of course I should have known that Shane would choose something from the same “London Calling” collection of Naked Decor offerings the moment I showed him the catalog. As much as I work with him and as long as I’ve known him, we’ve shared an underlying affinity for all-things-queen. He chose the Queen Tea Towel (p. 54), but I chose all the Queen Pillows with a Princess thrown in for good measure. Know an Anglophile? Anyone on your list who gets a bit of a Queen Complex? These accent pillows need to be theirs.
